After a few short films, on
the extreme low budget side, such as
Corridor (which is included on the French
special edition of baby blood), director
Alain Robak had finally found the means to
make his first full length feature film.
Luckily for us gore fans he made this movie
(originally not intended to be a full length
film). With its guts, gore and glorious
nudity, that is if you consider this hideous
woman to be hot, I know you gore whores will
all enjoy this 1989 French blood Fest.
Baby Blood
( AKA:
The Evil Within)
If you are out for a bizarre
story of mother and invading child
(un-voluntary Invasion), with almost as much
blood shed as the finaly of Peter Jackson’s
classic Dead Alive, welcome this blood
drenched gore fest with open arms!
In the beginning, the earth
was inhabited by creatures, gargoyles and
other nasty things (according to the
story). Reproduction was the way and is in
fact the way to keep the inhabitants of
earth thriving. When the earth made its
changes and all was wiped out by mother
nature, all the creatures perished but one,
roaming the earth waiting for the right time
and the right host in order to finally get
what it needs to begin its life in its true
form, to be born is the only way.
In the shitty confines of a
carnival and having an abusive
boss/boyfriend, Yanka is unhappy with her
life, but is she prepared for the misery she
is about to endure? Well let’s just see.
One night some of the carnies
have gathered around a new cheetah they had
received earlier that day. The cheetah
seemed to have been completely split open.
During her sleep Yanka feels something slip
into her, kinda like a nice big meat
injection. Being fast asleep she pays no
mind to this feeling and continues on with
her un-beauty rest.
After a few days Yanka starts
to realize what is happening to her, as she
begins to gain weight and starts to become
pregnant. When she finally decides to leave
the carnival and her abuser behind, the
voices begin the voice of her unborn. It
begins to explain to her who and what it is,
and why she is its chosen host. When it
explains to her what it needs in order to
grow and be born, Yanka does not appear to
be pleased at all, the need for human
blood. From this point in the film the
murders and blood ingestion begins! If she
does not do as told by the unborn he causes
her unbearable pain, almost forcing her to
kill… what am I saying, he does force her to
kill.
The blood flow is enormous, a
river of beautiful red artery filler! This
brings us to a funny point (or many points)
in the movie. After the killings begin,
Yanka roams the streets, town to town,
drenched in blood and not one person seems
to notice, all they ever notice is that she
is pregnant. I found all of this quite
comical, but enjoyable nonetheless.
When the child is finally
birthed, the blood shed continues with even
more intensity. When the seemingly normal
looking child kills for its last bit of
blood to become itself, its true form, it
sheds its human skin. At this point Yanka
realizes she can now attempt to stop the
insanity and death count, as it is no longer
on her womb. Can She stop her un-wanted
child, the now born from killing more
and making its way back to its rightful home
(the sea)? Only you will know after viewing
this insane flick, which you will buy after
reading this review.
Ratings:
For
direction and screenplay I give a 7. After
doing a few shorts and intending on making
this a short as well, for his first time
making a full length film on a low budget
and making a short story into a full length
story (which is probably hard for someone
who was not looking to do so), a big merit
goes out to Robak.
For
cinematography I give a 7. The grain and
grit that us old school horror and gore fans
love is delivered. The camera work in
general was done very well for the film. No
annoying in and out zooms, not too many
stand stills, just very fluent and fabu!
For
Acting I give a 7. Not the best, although
enjoyable and well done regardless. All the
actors and actresses in the film had the
same quality to their acting. All in all,
they are a pleasure to view, though I’m sure
watching the film in its native language,
rather than dubbed in English is probably
much more of a viewing pleasure, if you can
understand it!
For
FX I give a 9. From brutal killings a cool
looking creature and blood shed upon blood
shed, Baby Blood delivers hardcore on the
gore. Can I get a Hoorah!
Overall Baby Blood gets my rating of a 7.
Much fun and enjoyment for all gore fiends.
The delivery of all that is great about a
good, vile horror film is mixed in to this
recipe of gory, gooey, goodness!
