    From the mind of one of Japans most sickest underground directors comes a film of filth, snuff, the underworld of porn and not to mention menstruation.  So pin on your RED WINGS, sit back, relax, have a cup of Tampon Tea and watch.  From the sick mind of Daisuke Yamanouchi (who also brought us Red Room and Red Room 2), I now present to you what may possibly be his sickest and most infamous film;

Mu Zan E

     For starters id like to say that I have the Japanese VHS release of this film so I do not have names for you, do to the lack of subtitles, however the story is easy to follow, subs or not. Therefore this overview may be short, but it will be sweet, even though it may spoil in ways, this film is still a must see… Read and decide for yourself!

     We first witness a young reporter in search of the makings and organization of the underworld of porn.  She goes through films from stores and several contacts when she finally reaches someone who will speak with her and have her on set of one of their film shoots.  While sitting and watching this production she finds that these people do not make your average everyday in-out pornography, this is fetish porn, possibly better for her search for the ultimate in underground.  To explain this, it seems to me that she is in search for the world of the snuff video, but hard to tell when they don’t speak English.  The film she is watching the making of is a menstrual blood fetish film.

     After the viewing the reporter interviews the director and a few actors from this film, I’m guessing to learn more bout what and why they do what they do, or maybe perhaps if they enjoy what they do… who knows!

     At this point in time our  reporter has now found herself in a world that she may not want to creep to deep into, a world she may be looking for but shouldn’t be.  The young woman starts relieving video tapes of new footage by people in this underground industry.  At one point she receives a tape of killer proportions, it looks to be a snuff type film, but being that snuff does not exist she starts to dig even deeper than before.

     Now, finding herself in a situation that no person would want to be found.  She didn’t have to go to snuff, snuff has come to her.  In a car heading to the way outskirts of town, a wooded area and a shack is the destination.  This spot seems very familiar to her, it’s the spot she had viewed earlier on the tape of carnage, it is now she realizes she is to become the star of their next film.  Not only did curiosity kill the cat but the little Japanese lady as well.  From menstruation to death on celluloid, one should keep their curiosity to themselves, but for this woman its set in stone and carved on film!

     Does this underground world really exist?  His is a question we may never have the answer to, but Mu Zan E gives us a chance to witness what it may be like if it does exist.

Ratings:

     For the direction and screenplay I give an 8.  Out of the films I have seen from director Daisuke Yamanouchi this one is definitely his best work.  The Red Room series is very immature and cheap, though quite enjoyable, but this one is not!  It seems as if he went all out with the story and the direction of this movie.  It does not in any way have a cheap feel nor a dull story, even with it being extremely independent and created by a man who has had his fair share of porn direction, Mu Zan E brings us a new look at the extreme side of the industry as well as the side that supposedly does not exist.  Many film makers have done the same, but few have pulled it off with such ferocity and of course using topics as well as showing them… The menstrual blood fetish, to be exact!  This film is amongst the few that pulled the snuff style off very well, hopefully he has it in him to make more films of the type.

     As far as the acting goes I give a 7.  I don’t speak Japanese so it sounded like they did a great job, but if I spoke the language I may feel differently, who knows?  But for me an American watching a film of foreign language I thought it was fantastic, especially compared to his other films (again they are loads of gory fun, just cheesy).

     When it comes to the gore and FX (pornographic menstruation included) I give an 8.  With the budget and the bad FX independent Japanese films are usually known for, this one has overcome.  With the exception of the period juice being a bit watery when in fact its usually a bit darker, the gore and extremity of this film have beat out most films of the type especially of the ones that have come from Japan.  Aside from the snuff aspect, the porn parts are very believable, though not having real porn unlike some others, which is a definite surprise being that it’s the industry that he started with.  I will let you know of some other filmmakers that have done films of the same type, including a few that have used some pornographic material (some more than others) in the area where I tell you what else you may enjoy watching.

     Overall Mu Zan E get’s my rating of an 8.  I truly find this film to be one of a kind in the realm of pseudo-snuff filmmaking.  Daisuke Yamanouchi really put a good eye, his knowledge of the porn industry, his obvious love for blood and gore and his interest in snuff and put together an extreme film that is not to be ignored.

     Here is something I have not done in quite some time!  If you have seen and enjoyed films like (the ones that pulled it off well) the August Underground trilogy, Man Bites Dog, Scrap Book and one other Japanese film Psycho: The Snuff Reels, This film is highly recommended.  So do what you can to get it now, or wait for the U.S. release!  Whatever you decide to do…Enjoy!
